ZSPD - Shanghai (China)
General
There is flow control departing Hong Kong so expect significant delays. Expect a LAKES departure DOTMI transition. Airborne, significant track shortening will be given due to radar vectors on departure from Hong Kong and on the B777 you can gain 800 kilos of fuel. You need to reach cruise level by waypoint SOUSA. Flight Levels available are ONLY FL290, FL330 and FL 410. At waypoint DOTMI (FIR boundary), expect to be instructed by Guangzhou to offset 3 NM RIGHT of track. There is no need to pre-call Guangzhou northbound however, southbound, you need to pre-call Hong Kong 3 mins prior to reaching DOTMI. Standard levels northbound are 9000m (FL295), 10,200m (FL335) or 11,400m (FL374). When you leave Hong Kong's airspace northbound you go onto Guangzhou Ctl on 128.35 till waypoint IKATA. At waypoint SWA, if you need to divert further right due weather you will only have 3 to 5 miles approved due to Taipei FIR boundary. You will NOT be allowed to divert further right regardless. After IKATA you will contact Xiamen on 125.0 until about FQG where you transfer to another Xiamen frequency, 125.7. AT RUPOX you transfer to Shanghai Ctl on 128.75. For flights back to Hong Kong the choice of levels is limited and you can often get quite a low level. Southbound levels are 9600m (FL315), 10,800m (FL354) or 12,000m (FL394).
RWY 16/34 is used for landings and RWYs 17L/R, 35L,R for departures.
Arrival
- D-ATIS is available on a test basis. Voice ATIS is weak and comes in late. The voice transmission alternates between Mandarin and English.
- Transition level on arrival is FL118. {Boeing} You can set this on the fix page as a reminder.
- The CFP shows the arrival to 17/35 but the landing runway is usually 16/34. Note the SHY altitude restriction on the 20-1 chart! Expect radar vectors for an ILS approach. During periods of low traffic you might get a procedural approach.
- The arrival will route via BK NDB (LISHE). Track shortening from this position is common.
- Landing to the North - Expect the AND 11A [AND11A] arrival with an ATRIP transition. You will be cleared to track direct to AND VOR then pick the STAR. Note the several AT or BELOW, AT or ABOVE restrictions on the way points and the MAX 205 kts at the IAF restriction.
- Landing to the South - Expect the BK22A arrival [BK216] with a HSN transition. For runway 16, expect the BK22A and for runway 17R expect a BK12A. You could also get an AND arrival. For runway 16 expect the AND 22A and for runway 17R expect an AND 12A. Note the several AT or BELOW, AT or ABOVE restrictions on the way points and the MAX 205 kts at the IAF restriction.
- Speed control is normally in effect.
- The taxi is straight forward. {CX} Parking is normally at Terminal 2, on or near bay 67.
Departure
- All departures contain altitude restrictions. The restrictions are not emphasized on the Jeppesen Chart so you have to look carefully for them.
- From runway 35 you can expect a HSN 12D departure. The first hard altitude restriction is 4,930 feet. You will get restricted to 900M (3,000 feet) initially by Delivery or Tower. This SID has several altitude restrictions with the last one as far out as HSN (FL265A).
- From runway 17 expect either the HSN 13D (via NINAS) or HSN 11D (via UNTOP).
- The time given for “flow control” is a 'wheels up' time.
- Some operators have reported "FMC RUNWAY DISAGREE" messages when departing ZSPD. Check appropriate company NOTAMs and Bulletins.
Alternates
- Hongqiao (ZSSS) - 24NM W - China. Not an official alternate, but worth remembering it is there. This is the old Shanghai International is now a domestic airport only.
- Hangzhou (ZSHC) - 90NM SW - China. Not generally a commercially preferred alternate.
- Xiamen (ZSAM) - 450NM SSW - China.
- Incheon (RKSI) - 450NM NNE - South Korea.
- Fukuoka (RJFF) - 460NM ENE - Japan.
- Beijing (ZBAA) - 590NM NNW - China.
Tips and Traps
Approach Transition Runway 34 - There is a small ball flag note (2) that shows a transition from SHY to the CF. You can find it squeezed between the SHY VOR and D8.7 IDD.
